Bernadotte Art Awards awarded fashion designers Amanda Borgfors Mészáros and Pär Engsheden
Amanda Borgfors Mészáros has just graduated from the Fashion program where Pär Engsheden, fashion designer, is Programme Director. The apprentice and master are two of the five talents who receive the Bernadotte Art Awards 2018.
Craft based practice
Amanda Borgfors Mészáros' work is based on crafts where quality is always superior to quantity. Hand sewing and hand embroidery are often mixed with machine sewing, and the material selection plays a crucial role. Material like vegetable tanned leather is often present as well as a newly-found favorite woven band, which she overlaps to create sculptural garments and thus greatly reduces waste in manufacturing.
"To be awarded the Bernadotte Art Award means unbelievably much to me, especially considering where I am at the moment, at the beginning of my career. I'm incredibly grateful that my way of creating is rewarded, and it certainly gives me a continued strong driving force," says Amanda.
Collections shown around the world
Her previous collections from Beckmans have been shown at Stockholm Fashion Week, at Copenhagen Fashion Week in the competition Designers’ Nest as well as at Paris Fashion Week. Her collection Global Nomad is currently on tour in the exhibition Ung Svensk Form and is a collection that competed in the finals of the international competition Redress Design Award in Hong Kong last autumn. Her latest collection, DNA, was premiered at Beckmans Graduation Fashion Show at Kulturhuset Stadsteatern in May. Next, it will appear on Design Students' Selected 2018 at Formex in August.
The master of couture
Since 2015, Pär Engsheden has been Program Director of Fashion at Beckmans College of Design and Senior Lecturer in Fashion Design. He himself studied at the college between 1988-1991 and was already back then known for his skillfulness, extreme accuracy and passion for classical elegance.
Pär Engsheden works mainly with couture and is a Royal Court Supplier. For several years he has collaborated with Sara Danius, Professor of Literature at Stockholm University, and together with her he has created a number of acclaimed dresses which she has worn on official occasions.
Over the years he has received several honors ratings, among others he has been elected into the Stockholm's Taylor's Guild, a membership that testifies to great craftsmanship. At the Elle Magazine Gala in 2011 he was awarded the honorary prize. In 2013, he was awarded the royal medal, Illis Quorum, by the Minister of Culture making him one of the first fashion designers ever to receive it.
About the Bernadotte Art Awards
