What we clothe our bodies in is one of many ways in which we express our identity, yet how often do we see proof that those around us interpret us in the way we might wish? Is it not those who meet who really determine who we are? If this is the case, do we not have as many identities as we do encounters? Should we instead begin using words or other forms of communication to really tell the world who we are?
My piece explores what identity is, what it consists of and how fashion can create identities. I have studied the difference between selling a designer on the basis of their consumer brand and the creation of individual pieces which people can use to strengthen their own identity. I have created a collection which seeks to communicate our striving for a self through the identities of others instead of our own.
