Creative integrity on commercial terms
Beckmans’ advertising & graphic design study programme is the only advertising course in the country at higher education level. The study programme differs from other, corresponding courses in that it provides the students with a good basic training in both advertising and marketing, as well as in graphic design, artistic realisation and other forms of visual communication. The training includes courses in colour & design, theory, illustration, marketing & communication as well as free exercises. Beckmans places far more emphasis on artistic creativity and general creative training than other advertising courses.
»Our courses have an unusual degree of artistic orientation, and are primarily ideas-based,« says Annika Berner, one of the advertising & graphic design programme’s principal teachers. »The timetable is packed solid, and there’s an awful lot for the students to learn over the course of three years.«
A lot of time is spent during the first year allowing the students to develop their own individual modes of expression and to find their role within the group - to “learn to be Beckmans students,” as Annika Berner puts it.
»We only have one goal, and that’s
to always achieve the best possible result.«
The next two years are then primarily spent on assignments in the form of projects, where the students, individually and in groups, under guidance but with an ever-increasing amount of freedom, are allowed to translate their knowledge into practical experience - often in cooperation with the fashion and design students, with students from other colleges, and, on larger projects, with commercial companies and official authorities. The tempo is deliberately turned up high, with a variety of larger and smaller projects in progress simultaneously - just like in the professional workplace.
»We only have one goal, and that’s to always achieve the best possible result,« says Annika Berner. »This entire college is driven by a strong commitment to tuition, with constant presentations and constant criticism. We tailor our tuition to provide an insight into every single media in major use at the time - film, multimedia, the Web or event marketing, for instance. But we also have continuity in the form of the guest tutors we select. Many of the teachers have been Beckmans students themselves, so they know the College’s culture and share the students’ strong sense of commitment.«
